About FIRST and West Ottawa’s 20-Year History with Robotics

FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was founded in 1989 by  Dean Kamen, an entrepreneur who began his career inventing medical devices and later such creations the iBOT Mobility Wheelchair and the Segway Human Transporter. Kamen noted that our country’s output of scientists and engineers would not be sufficient for the future, and he set out to inspire youth to pursue education and careers in these fields. He created the FIRST Robotics Competition as an avenue for inspiration by using a sports-centered theme to attract and develop students with skills and potential to continue our country’s superiority in technology and advancement. The strength of the program lies in partnering schools with local businesses to provide mentoring as students work to create a robot using advanced technologies that are making West Ottawa students career-ready!

“FIRST has broadened my opportunities” –Drew Westerhof (Former Student)

“FIRST gave me a love for working with mechanical engineering and steered me to where I am today.” –Mike Olson (Team Mentor)

“FIRST is the launching pad for the future careers of high schoolers to help better the world” –Cheryl Walters (10th year Mentor)
