Achievements of the West Ottawa High School Graduating Class of 2012 

Some of the achievements of the graduating Class of 2012 during their senior year are:

  • This graduating class is honored for:
    • 37 seniors recognized as top academic scholars
    • 117 seniors honored with Gold Cords for having a 3.5 GPA and Above
    • 3 National Merit Finalists
    • 3 National Merit Commended Students
    • 10 IB Diploma Candidates
  • The Senior Class was awarded approximately $3.5 million dollars in scholarships from colleges, universities, local service groups, organizations and companies, or memorials.
  • The Select Women’s Ensemble received a rare Superior rating at District and State Choral Festival with a PERFECT score.
  • The Marching Band received a 1st Division Rating at the District Festival for the 9th year in a row.
  • The Girls’ Swimming and Diving Team placed 7th at the State Finals.
  • The Senior Lead Theatre Department performed Guys and Dolls and separate male and female cast performances of Lord of the Flies.
  • The Boys’ Tennis Team was Conference and Regional Champions and finished 8th in the State Finals.
  • The Symphony Band received a 1st Division Rating at District and State Festivals for the 7th year in a row.
  • The Football Team made the state playoffs and the Boys’ Soccer Team was a District Finalist in the fall.
  • The Senior Lead Junior Achievement Pink Out Group raised $54,000 for cancer research.  This was the largest single donation from a school event to the Van Andel Institute.
  • The First Robotics Team won the West Michigan District Competition at GVSU and was runner-up at the Washington, D.C., Regional Competition.
  • The Concert Band received a 1st Division Rating at District Festival.
  • The Jazz Band received a 1st Division Rating at the State Jazz Festival and took 2nd Place at the CMU Jazz Festival.
  • The West Ottawa Science Olympiad Team went to the State Finals for the 10th consecutive year!
  • The West Ottawa Hockey Team was Tier 3 Conference Champions.
  • The Girls’ Basketball Team was District Champions and Honorable Mention Academic All State.
  • Three seniors received Michigan WoodLinks Certification.
  • The CTEE organization helped to collect and donate food for the Community Action House during the Month of Caring this spring.
  • Twenty two senior artists were selected to have their art work compete at the national level.  Eight have been Congressional Finalists, three have been chosen to have their art displayed in the Governor’s Traveling Show, and two have or will have their art work displayed in Washington, D.C., and two more have been recognized at Carnegie Hall.
  • The Vocalaires and Concert Choir received Excellent Ratings at District and State Vocal Solo and Ensemble.
  • Student Senate lead the student body by hosting three blood drives and were responsible for donating enough blood for the senior class to be rewarded three scholarships.
  • Student Senate seniors also lead food drives and adopt-a-family (for multiple families) during the Christmas season to help West Ottawa families in need.
  • The Girls’ Tennis Team were regional champions this spring and finished 10th in the State.
  • The Boys’ Rugby Team finished the year as Michigan Youth Rugby Association State Champions!
  • Eighty-nine percent (89%) of the Class of 2012 indicated plans to attend two- or four-year college, technical school or the military.
