Science Olympiad at West Ottawa

Visit the West Ottawa Science Olympiad website for more information

West Ottawa Science Olympiad began in 1999 when Coach Bob Myers agreed to start a club activity. The first competiton WOSO attended was Regionals in March 2000. The team was well short of the 15 students that are allowed and only entered about 19 of the 23 events. Although they only ranked 19th overall, they were awarded a trophy as the highest placing rookie team.

2001 saw an even smaller team and fewer events entered. The team managed to hold 19th place despite this hardship.

In 2002 WOSO entered all 23 events and for the first time had a full team of 15 students. That year they improved to 13th overall.

2003 was the breakthrough year. When Coach Gus Lukow joined the team they attended the invitational competition at Clio Michigan. Here they placed 8th overall, placing ahead of some of the States tougher teams. This helped motivate them to earn 5th at Regionals and Qualify for their first State competition. That year they placed 26th in the state.

The next year Coaches Cherylyn Weyhmiller and Kelly DeWitt came on board. This year the team won the Clio Invitational as well as the first annual WOSO Invitational. WOSO went on to place 3rd at regionals and 2nd at state. The top two teams from the state were invited to Nationals. Traveling to Juniata College in Huntingdon PA, the team placed 16th overall in the Nation!

2005, with the further addition of Coaches Dan Dennis and Doug Ragan. WOSO earned a Clio Victory, WOSO Victory, 2nd at Regionals, State Championship and 15th at Nationals.

In 2006, with Mr. Endean, Mr. Hamilton and Mr. Throesch joining as coaches. WOSO placed 3rd at Clio behind two Ohio teams, first at the WOSO invitational, 2nd at State and Nationals and 13th at the National competition at IU!

Way to go WO!

 Congratulations 2007-2008 Team!

West Ottawa High School's Science Olympiad team placed third in the State Tournament, narrowly missing an invitation to the National tournament. In the end, the team earned 1st place in 4 events, a team record and more than any other single team. We earned medals in 10 of the 23 events. For the first time, every member of our team who competed in an event at the State Tournament earned at least one medal. Any disappointment we feel dissolves as we remember a day where everyone truly performed their best and a competition that was fair and hard fought.

Gold Medalists: Jason vonEhr & David DeVries in Ecology, Kristi Wu & Peter Minnich in Food Science, Jason Litke & Peter Heyboer in Robot Ramble, Thomas Endean, Nick Hansen & Greg Kolean in Wright Stuff

Silver Medalists: Jake Shanafelt & Taylor Pratt in Electric Vehicle

Bronze Medalists: Taylor Pratt & Greg Schramm in Forensics

A big THANK YOU to all of the members of the West Ottawa Community for their continuing support of this important program.
