“For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology.”, (FIRST), was founded in 1989 by Dean Kamen, the famous entrepreneur who invented many modern marvels, such as the Segway Human Transporter. He saw that the world was heading in such a direction that science and technology were rapidly growing in importance. Noting that the current output of scientists and engineers in the world would not be sufficient, he set out to inspire youth to pursue education and careers in these fields. Thus, FIRST was born.
“FIRST changed my major.” –Kelly Walters (Alum, 5th year Mentor)

“FIRST gave me a love for working with mechanical engineering and steered me to where I am today.” –Mike Olson (Alum, 1st year Mentor)
