Best Books for Young Adults (BBYA) is a national committee of ALA's YALSA division (the Youth Services Division of the American Library Association). The committee chooses the best books published for young people ages 12-18 within a publishing year. Only fifteen librarians from all over the United States and Canada serve on the committee each year.
Mrs. Dobrez and Mrs. Rutan have both served three-year terms on BBYA. West Ottawa students at Harbor Lights, Macatawa Bay and the High Schools have access to the hundreds of books sent by the publishers and donated by the librarians to West Ottawa. Students have the opportunity to read books by their favorite authors months before publication date. Students are also invited to participate in a BBYA Book Club and discuss books with other students.
Students from Harbor Lights, Mac Bay and the High School are invited to join the BBYA Book Discussion Club. Students meet twice a month to discuss the newest books. The BBYA collection is kept at Harbor Lights during the summer, and summer meetings are held as well.
Since 2001, Mrs. Dobrez and Mrs. Rutan have donated over $365,000 in new books to the West Ottawa secondary libraries. How cool is that?
BBFYA 2012 Nominations (of books being published from Sept. 20101- Dec. 2012) will be posted here monthly as they are announced.
"Wops Bbya" has a Facebook page now. You can be our friend and discuss books online between meetings and get information about the club.
