The West Ottawa Story: IB Candidates

May 20, 2016 – West Ottawa is one of very few schools that offers the International Baccalaureate Diploma program. Students who elect to commit to this put themselves in a place where they will be challenged at a higher level of rigor.

This past week, our 16 IB candidates (pictured below) were recognized in a ceremony at West Ottawa High School. IB Diploma students engage in projects related to Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) and take a set of six IB courses that culminate, among other things, in a 4,000 word essay on a topic of the student’s choosing. Those topics ranged from causes of the Korean conflict to the impact of different soil composites on tomato seeds.

To get to the finish line, these students need perseverance, determination and some dedicated mentors on staff to see them through. The pride on their faces was clear as they received cords and tassels for graduation that will signify them as IB candidates. Their essays have literally been sent around the world to be evaluated, and we look forward to their scores and therefore successful completion of the program in July.

IB is but one of the many opportunities our students are offered here at West Ottawa. And as IB Coordinator Corban VanDam put it, “It’s our pleasure.”

Have a great Friday,
